In Texas, barbecue means brisket, not sausage. Still, I ordered potato salad because I wasn't hungry and it was nearly closing time. It was good potato salad, not pickled mashed taters or wannabe deli fare, like I often get. I also enjoyed the last of their cole slaw.
Then I noticed the wall of trophies behind me, more trophies than I'd ever seen outside a high school gym foyer. I took a closer look and realized that every one was from a BBQ cook-off - trophies for brisket, chicken, pork - all won in less than ten years. Well, maybe I was hungry after all.
I joked with Boo, "Did you run out of room for trophies?" and she explained that she had three times as many still at home. Well, maybe this wasn't your typical small town restaurant after all. I ordered just a little brisket, just to taste it.
Oh man. I was speechless. I've never eaten such rich, tender barbecue. I've eaten some of Texas's best, and I've cooked the stuff myself, so I know the challenge of balancing flavor, moisture and texture. Jake and Boo met the challenge.
As I ate, a young man came in and placed his order. Turned out he'd just finished cooking 200 lbs. of barbecue for a wedding reception - and he wanted supper at Jake and Boo's.. -

Ribs were great
Sausage was great
Pork carnitas were so-so
Chicken was good
Atmosphere and service was awkward. (Restaurant sits behind an antique store) -

Home style food made to order! The burger was large and no frozen patty here. Good onion rings. Hand battered chicken fried steak with fresh cut fries is worth the drive for the CFS enthusiast. You can also do a little antique shopping, because you have to walk past the stuff to get to the food!

Had my first experience with the barbecue from Jake n Boo's last night. They catered a wedding I attended and I have to say it was some of the best 'cue I have had in years. The brisket was fork tender and well seasoned, the sausage was juicy and flavorful. the chicken was amazing - tender and very juicy. The sides - potato salad and beans were equally tasty. Beyond that, the owners were friendly, communicative and did a great job of making everyone happy. Well done!
